Chapter 24

“So, wait,” Danny continued over breakfast the next morning. “Are you saying Trenton Cassidy is a ghost? Or he's been reincarnated?” Indy’s book sat on the table in front of him. He flipped through the pages, stopping occasionally to read something that caught his eye.

“No,” Indy said. “Eliot thinks that’s too out there. We both guess that he must have found Anders Markham’s original journal or notes or something. And, if he’s the murderer, perhaps he’s recreating the killings.”

“Why would a famous author do that?”

“I don’t know. I don’t have all the answers yet. Maybe he’s very creative and they appeal to his artistic right-brain. Wait. Left-brain? I can never remember which is which.”

“You think he’s doing it for fun?”

“It doesn’t seem very fun to me. But who knows what goes on in the mind of a psychopath?”

Danny took a last gulp of his coffee, carried the mug and his plate to the sink and rinsed them off before loading them in the dishwasher.

As he slipped on his jacket, Indy said, “Are you going to look into Trenton Cassidy?”

“Uh,” Danny started, not looking at her. “We’ll see.”

“We’ll see?” Indy stood and blocked his path. “He’s described exactly what Eliot’s killer did, which is what the current killer is doing, and you think “We’ll see” is enough? You have to do something!”

“I’ll see what I can do. Is that better?”

“Marginally,” Indy said, but softened.

“Look,” Danny said. “I truly appreciate your help. You’re very creative at turning up suspects. The bookstore angle is interesting. If you want to spend a little time following up on the owner, it couldn’t hurt. In fact, it’s an area we aren’t focused on, so it would help us out. And I’ll see what I can find out about Officer Austin.”

“I’m creative?”

Danny laughed that this was the one thing she focused on out of his reply. “You’re boundlessly creative. Another one of the many things I love about you.”

“I love you, too. Be careful today.” It didn’t matter how long they’d been together, in the back of her mind, India always worried when he left for work. Watching the news everyday put a fine point on the devastation created when a police officer lost his or her life in the line of duty.

“Always am.”

“Oh, wait.” Indy went back to the table to pick up the Cassidy book and handed it to him. “In case you have a chance to look at it.”

“Thanks.”

She followed him to the front door for his goodbye kiss. Looking past him, she noticed that the police cruiser wasn’t in front of their house. She looked at Danny in alarm.

“I sent him off last night when I got home,” Danny said. “I don’t think we need a permanent cop watching the house.”

“Maybe not,” Indy said, shaking off her unease. “If you say it’s okay that he’s gone, then I’m okay with it. Not to mention, since it was Officer Austin, I didn’t feel that safe.” She threw in that last bit as a subtle reminder to Danny that Andy wasn’t in the clear as far as she was concerned.
